FAQ
What makes a serum different from a moisturizer and do I need both?
Serums are lightweight, highly concentrated formulas for deep delivery of key ingredients, such as vitamins, antioxidants, and peptides. In contrast, moisturizers are thicker in consistency and work more on the surface of the skin to form a barrier locking in moisture and preventing excess water loss. Many serums contain hydrators, such as hyaluronic acid, and can provide moisture to skin. For some people, a serum formulated with multiple moisturizing agents (Tensage Intensive Serum 50) may provide adequate hydration. In many cases though, a separate moisturizer needs to be incorporated to not only provide moisture, but also prevent water loss in the skin.
How do you apply a serum?
Serums work best when applied to clean skin prior to moisturizer or sunscreen. Serums may be applied in the morning, evening, or both depending on package directions. Serums that contain retinol (Retriderm) are best suited for evening use, whereas antioxidant serums provide daytime protection from free radicals.
Can I use more than one serum in my routine?
Yes! Serums can be used together with a layering technique or they can be used at different times either am/pm use or alternate day use. If layering, apply the thinnest serum first and wait for it to absorb into the skin before applying another serum on top.
At what age should I start using serums?
Serums can be a great line of defense in preventing aging so starting in your 20’s would be ideal to combat premature skin aging. However, it’s never too late to start using a serum no matter what your age.
Who should use an exfoliant serum?
If you notice your skin looking dull or lack luster, an exfoliating serum is a great option to restore skin radiance and luminosity. Exfoliants like alpha hydroxy acids (AHA),(C+AHA Renewal Serum) beta hydroxy acids (BHA), (KNR Serum) or retinol (Retriderm) are best for smoothing and improving dull skin. They can also help with acne prone skin due to their ability to remove dead skin cells that contribute to the formation of acne blemishes.
